Jakarta Today: Kylie Minogue now in Jakarta set to dazzle

Fans of Australian pop sensation Kylie Minogue can rest assured that they will soon be able to enjoy a world-class spectacle from the reigning queen of pop. The chanteuse landed on Sunday evening at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after a giving a sold-out performance in Bangkok over the weekend.

And good news for fans who haven’t got tickets for the show. Wiradi from promoter Electronic City Entertainment said that tickets are still available both online or at the box office. The promoter expects to see 10,000 fans gather for the show. Hopes are high that the 43-year-old siren will bring sexy back to Jakarta on June 27 with her gig, billed as “The Show Girl Returns — Kylie Minogue Aphrodite Tour 2011”.

In a one-night performance to be staged at the Sentul International Convention Center (SICC) in Bogor, West Java, fans are likely to hear the pop princess sing her hit songs All the Lovers, Get Outta My Way, and Better Than Today, culled from her 11th solo album titled Aphrodite.

The album, released in June 2010 in Japan and worldwide in July that same year, has won critical acclaim with a rave review from Rolling Stone magazine calling the album “her finest work since 1997’s under-rated Impossible Princes. Music critic Jon Pareles of the New York Times said that Aphrodite was part of a pop movement that was reviving dance beats from 1970s disco and 1990s music, perhaps calculating that dance music has thrived in past economic downturns.

Pareles said that Minogue has joined the Black Eyed Peas, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Shakira, Christina Aguilera, Kelis and even Miley Cyrus in latching onto club sounds. Since breaking into the pop scene in the 1980s fresh off a stint as Australia’s sweetheart in the daytime soap Neighbors, many have dubbed her one of the planet’s favorite club divas ever since. Aphrodite debuted at number one on the UK charts with some of its singles gaining popularity in the US clubs.

Kylie confirmed that she was a had become a UK resident and announced that she would make a tour during her appearance on the BBC show Friday Night with Jonathan Ross last year. The breast cancer that struck the singer in 2005 has not stopped her reign over the pop chart. She underwent a surgery for the cancer in May 2005, after her diagnosis forced her to cancel the Australian and Asian legs of her Showgirl Tour, as well as her headlining stint at the UK’s Glastonbury festival.

Reports indicate that the Jakarta gig will be conducted on a grand scale, with Kylie bringing six band members and 12 glamorous dancers on stage. The concert is also expected be a glamorous affair with 200 garish outfits and 100 pairs of shoes reportedly in the tour’s wardrobe trunks. Show promoters Electronic City Entertainment and MP Entertainment set ticket prices for Rp 1 million (US$116) for first class seats, Rp 1.5 million for premium festival seats and Rp 3 million for VIP class seats.
